Bring the flavor to burger night!

This burger left me speechless the first time I tried it — the kind of bite that makes you go “mmmm” and then say, “dang, that’s good!”

Inspired by the Shack Shake French Onion Burger, this version layers sweet caramelized onions, crunchy fried onions, melted Swiss, and a garlicky parmesan sauce. I infuse the patties with French onion dip mix and Worcestershire sauce to deepen that savory, onion-forward flavor.

With the seasoned patties and all the toppings combined, these burgers deliver a melt-in-your-mouth, steakhouse-style experience you can easily recreate at home. If you want an elevated burger night, these French Onion Burgers are an excellent choice.

Key ingredients and substitution options

Below are notes on important ingredients and easy swaps. The full ingredient list with measurements is in the recipe card further down.

  • Worcestershire sauce – adds sweet, salty, tangy umami. Substitute soy sauce if needed.
  • Ground beef – use an 80/20 ratio (80% lean, 20% fat) for juicy, flavorful patties.
  • French onion seasoning – a packet of French onion soup or dip mix works well. You can also use a homemade French onion seasoning blend.
  • Swiss cheese – Swiss is classic here; if you prefer, use gruyere for a richer flavor.
  • Garlic parmesan sauce – a creamy garlic-parmesan sauce complements the onions and cheese. A bottled version works, or make a quick homemade copycat.
  • Caramelized onions – these can be made up to a week ahead and refrigerated. They take time to caramelize but need only occasional stirring.

What to serve with the burgers

For extra onion flavor, serve with Air Fryer Onion Rings or extra caramelized onions alongside potato chips as a quick dip. Steakhouse-style sides like truffle fries, rosemary parmesan sweet potato fries, or cheesy grilled potatoes also pair beautifully.

Ingredients

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 pound yellow onions, diced into ¼ inch squares
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt

Burgers

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef, 80/20
  • 2 tablespoons french onion seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
  • 4 slices swiss cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns, recommended: brioche buns
  • ¼ cup garlic parmesan sauce
  • ½ cup crispy onions

Instructions

Caramelized Onions

  • Prepare the caramelized onions; they can be made up to 7 days ahead.
  • Melt butter in a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions, spread evenly, cook 5 minutes, sprinkle with salt, then reduce heat to medium.
  • Cook 45–60 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes, until the onions are deeply golden. Remove from heat and set aside.

Burgers

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, French onion seasoning, and Worcestershire sauce. Form into four 6-ounce patties and press an indentation in the center of each.
  • Heat a grill to medium-high.
  • Grill the burgers 4–5 minutes per side.
  • During the last 1–2 minutes, top each patty with a slice of Swiss cheese.
  • Toast the buns on the grill.
  • Remove burgers from the grill and let rest 3–5 minutes on a cutting board.
  • Spread garlic parmesan sauce on each bottom bun.
  • Assemble: place a burger on the bottom bun, top with caramelized onions and crispy onions, and finish with the top bun.

Notes

  • Portioning tools: a kitchen scale and burger press help make evenly sized patties.
  • Let burgers rest: wait 3–5 minutes before placing patties on buns so juices redistribute and buns stay crisp.
  • Doneness guide: grilling a 1-inch-thick patty 4–5 minutes per side yields medium; add a minute per side for medium-well and 6–7 minutes per side for well-done.
  • Hot grill for a sear: cook over medium-high (about 350–400°F) for a good crust and juicy interior.
  • Don’t press the patties: flattening them with a spatula squeezes out juices and reduces flavor.
  • Stovetop option: cook on a grill pan, cast iron, or heavy skillet over medium-high heat for 4–5 minutes per side; add cheese during the final minute or two.
